A short trip north from Newport, Oregon is Depoe Day. The entrance to the harbor from the ocean passes under the highway into a completely enclosed “smallest harbor in the world.” It can be a thrill on a windy day to watch boats make the run on the narrow channel.
On one side of the Coast Highway are numerous shops and on the other side you can walk along the cliffs right above the ocean. Depot Bay is famous for its whale watching. The whales stay there year round and you can usually see one or two from the walkway.
Depoe Bay is also the home of some very good restaurants, if you visit there plan on having lunch or dinner.
One our favorite restaurants is Tidal Raves Seafood Grill. The food is great and the view is even better. You can sometimes spot whales while dinning.
